An Enchanted Evening Prom presented by the Class of 2022 could not have been possible without persistence and a dedicated community. The committee of six Junior students led by Lisa Evans and Anna Frauenkron worked closely with the COVID Committee and administration to navigate the ever-changing guidelines sent out by the state of Minnesota. The focus was always to aim for a traditional event with back-up plans in place to meet pandemic restrictions.
To allow for spectators at the Grand March, it was held off-site at the Houston Nature Center bandshell. Due to concerns about students going to various restaurants in counties with higher positive COVID case rates, the committee decided to host a catered meal, and our food service director, Robin Wedl, jumped at the chance to provide a formal dinner for the students. Many community members, staff members and businesses donated their time and supplies to transform the gymnasium into a dining hall with social distancing guidelines in place. Due to lock-in events not being allowed, the post-Prom event could not happen this year. However, this parent-led committee generously donated a hypnotist show to add enchantment to the evening.
Three weeks prior to the event, the prom committee learned that their goal of holding a dance would be possible. At first the guidance was to have chair dancing or groups of six to have designated spaces. The committee requested that the dance take place under the tent, outside in the courtyard, which made fewer restrictions necessary. Attendance at the event was just shy of a typical year, and guests from other districts were allowed to attend. A huge thank you goes to the American Legion as well as the numerous supporters from the Houston school and community that made this a memorable evening during a year of uncertainty.
Congratulations to our 2021 Prom Royalty!
