For Students
A wealth of research has shown the importance of music in a child’s academic achievement. Studies by the College Entrance Examination Board and the US Department of Education have found that students with experience in music performed better in school, particularly in math.
Music is integrated into the Core Knowledge curriculum used in grades kindergarten through eight at Houston Public Schools. Students can learn history, math, and science, just by learning what a song means, where it comes from, how to count the notes and rhythms, and how their instruments, their voice, their muscles, and their bodies create a sound. Studying music also encourages the self-discipline required to be successful in school and in life.
There is also the sheer joy of making music, of self-expression, of being a part of something bigger than oneself.
Music is a vital part of Houston Public Schools’ curriculum. Houston’s music program receives a great deal of support and appreciation from the community, including an annual Music Boosters Auction every fall.
